Let us remember the true meaning of the Holiday and be grateful for all we have. Help someone less fortunate if possible.Attention, fencers! Miami Fencing Club is taking a break to celebrate Thanksgiving. Classes will be suspended from Wednesday, November 27th to Sunday, December 1st. We will see you along again on Monday, December 2nd. Happy Turkey Day!
Happy Veteran’s Day! Today is when we honor those who have served in the armed forces including, our very own Maestro Mike Elder who served during the Vietnam War. Outside of the military, Mike studied German and history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Then, he attended University of California Berkeley to further study history and also learned about philosophy. He has also worked in a handful of fields including education, finance, travel and tourism and, of course, fencing. Mike founded the Miami Fencing Club 1988 and, for many of us, he was our introduction to the sport. His no-nonsense, tough-love approach both nurtured our talents and pushed us to become better with each lesson. Maestro Elder, we salute you! Here is Mike in the Navy in 1969 in Viet-Nam, Yankee Station.
We have new hours for our Downtown venue, 518-520 West Flagler St. Miami, FL. 33126. The new hours are:
Wednesdays – 6:30pm – 10:00pm
Saturdays: 10:00am – 12 noon.
Maestro Max will be in attendance on Wednesdays and Saturdays while Coach Ichi or Coach Ivan will be there on all open days. Maestro Mike may be lurking around as well. Come on down!
The Youth Development Committee of the USA Fencing Board of Directors have changed the format for Youth-10 and Youth-12 direct elimination bouts. The new format is in effect for the 2013-2014 season. Click here to read the details (pages 2-3). Direct elimination will be two five point bouts rather than two of three bouts.
All tournaments operated by The Miami Fencing Club will follow the new format. Please be sure all your Y10 and Y12 fencers are aware of these changes,
